Net Krafter : What the New Cataclysm Professions Reforging Will Mean For Gear Crafters
When Blizzard announced the release of World of Warcraft Cataclysm at Blizzcon, they did it with a slew of new details about upcoming profession changes – one of those being reforging. Now, most players have been wanting to see self-repairing of their gear. After all, if you can originate your own mail, why can’t you fix it? But, Blizzard seems intent on retention their ages old cash sink in the game and as a result, the new highlight will be Reforging instead.
What is Reforging?
In a nutshell, reforging is a recipe by which individuals can admittedly turn their gear or the gear of other players by removing skill points from one area and placing them in another. This is an provocative highlight for a few reasons. First it is going to allow there to be infinitely more gear options in the game. And because the reforging will not allow anyone to shift all the numbers into a particular stat, there will be no “uber” gear crafted either.
Second, it will originate an entirely different store of individuals in capital cities who can offer their reforging services for fellow players. Instead of just crafting new items, all of the gear crafters – blacksmiths, engineers, tailors, and leatherworkers, will be able to take the gear their fellow players procure from raids and PvP and then start tacking on different stats where needed.
New Levels of Customization
This will allow players who may find confident pieces of gear slightly inferior due to their focus on the wrong stats much more willing to use those pieces. It might also originate a higher degree of conference in instance parties over who gets what pieces of loot due to their different stats and how those stats can be shifted nearby now that any piece of gear can admittedly be changed.
Whatever ends up happening though, the straightforward truth is that reforging is a major new expanding to the game and one that will prove to be incredibly beloved when Cataclysm finally launches in 2010.

In a nutshell, reforging is a method by which individuals can easily change their gear or the gear of other players by removing skill points from one area and placing them in another. This is an interesting feature for a few reasons. First it is going to allow there to be infinitely more gear options in the game. And because the reforging will not allow anyone to shift all the numbers into a single stat, there will be no “uber” gear crafted either.

Whatever ends up happening though, the simple truth is that reforging is a major new addition to the game and one that will prove to be incredibly popular when Cataclysm finally launches in 2010.

Changes to Blacksmithing With Cataclysm and Level 525 Illustrious
Oct 1st
With Cataclysm fast approaching, let’s have a look at what we might expect from the expansion, in particular the effect it will have on the Blacksmithing profession with the introduction of the new tier and Level 525 Illustrious.
As is often the case, the developers are keeping a lot back before the release, but what we have been told so far seems to suggest there will be a new axiom added to the professions mix with Archaeology providing some interesting choices for the budding crafter.
It seems that the new secondary profession of archaeology will introduce optional reagents into the mix which alter the buffs of the weapons and armour that you can make. Giving you some interesting choices along the way.
This simple change is actually quite a radical departure for Blizzard. It means that level 525 Illustrious blacksmiths will have a far greater choice in the usability of the pieces they craft, perhaps allowing items to be tailored to be used by different classes dependent on the buffs etc.. We will have to wait and see.
This benefits developers of course. It means that one graphic model requires little or no change to be used for many different weapon and armour types, while still fitting the logical structure of the game. I would rather see many more items, allowing far greater customization of look and appearance, but this seems to suggest that will not happen.
Expect the interaction between crafting professions to be a real feature when Cataclysm hits. You will find that many items can only be crafted with reagents sourced from other professions as Blizzard looks to integrate them all into some kind of symbiosis. I expect this to be similar to the way that that say you currently make the rods for Enchanters etc.
Straight after Cataclysm is released I expect to see a real race for characters to reach level 525 Illustrious Blacksmithing. Remembering my experience with Burning Crusade and Wrath, the high levels of demand for the top crafted items dies off pretty quickly as character find better look in the instances. With that in mind, consider levelling up mining and maybe the new archaeology profession (which is secondary, and therefore can be used by all players). As without these support professions, levelling up Blacksmithing will be a very expensive prospect, and the profitability of your crafted items will be reduced, or possibly zero.
I think many long term Blacksmiths are hoping that the profession is given a boost this time. WotLK added a very unbalanced tier to the craft, not even allowing you to make a decent tanking weapon, which is (after all) one of the main reasons many people took the Blacksmithing route in the first place.
Cataclysm will bring change with it. I hope we can all look forward to having a great time reaching level 525 Illustrious Blacksmithing.
