Skid Pallets – What Type?

What type of skid or pallet is right for you? You may choose wood, metal, or plastic standard deck sizes or you may have specialty ones that are designed to move the specific product you have. Beyond the material, there are different options with varying features. You might even have a pallet with rollers on it. You may have an over sized option or one with special setup to secure large loads. There are block types, double wing types, GMA-style, single faced, and other setups. It’s important to understand the load capacity so that you know the skid can hold the goods and so that you know that the fork lift or pallet jack can safely move it.

Packing the pallet needs to be done carefully. Loose loads are a danger to people, to the equipment moving them, and to the equipment itself. Most breakages occur due to lack of careful packing. Standards for packing should be followed.

Moving Them Around

Various machinery exists to help make moving goods around easy and ergonomic. The right machinery used correctly not just improves safety but it also improves ergonomics in the warehouse. This results in fewer workplace injuries and increased productivity. Use the right equipment based on the load and follow safety precautions to ensure that people and products are safe. Trained forklift operators follow safety considerations. They know how to drive the truck safely to reduce tipping and know how to safely secure loads. They also know how to calculate the load so that it is centred correctly as well. Federal safety organizations in most countries have standards for training and education of workers that handle fork lift machines so be sure your employees are adequately trained.

Storing Them

Storage solutions can be customized or they can be basic. Some companies merely stack pallets one on top of another, when containers can support the weight. But in many warehouse operations use pallet racking. These shelves will store the product and it can be stored quite high. Again, correct forklift operation procedures are necessary to move them up and down.

Shipping

When moving skids for shipping careful safety consideration is necessary. People may be in the way, loading docks need to be secured, and trucks need to be able to support the weight of the load and the machine carrying the load. Many companies have both heavy duty and light duty machines for safe maneuvering of loaded skids.
